Zanzibar – “The Spice Land…”

TOUR DESCRIPTIONS:

City Tour:
This is a guided historical tour to the old town of Zanzibar, fondly known as Stone Town. The tour is done mainly on foot, providing you the opportunity to stroll through the narrow alleys, sighting splendid artifacts like carved Arab doors with brass studs, carved balconies, and the old post office.

The highlights of the tour are:

  • The central market, built in 1904, is a bustling place where fish, fruits, vegetables, and spices are sold
  • The Anglican Cathedral (1873), built on the site of the former slave market
  • The National Museum, which opened in 1925
  • Tippu Tip House, residents of the famous slave trade
  • House of Wonders (1883)
  • Palace Museum, formerly for the Sultan’s residents
  • Maruhubi Palace ruins; built from 1880 – 1882, this palace accidentally burned down in 1889

Spice Tour:
A trip to the lush green gardens of innumerable spice and tropical fruit trees. Many of these spices have medicinal properties and are still used by the locals to cure certain maladies. Taste a variety of fruits ranging from the rose apple to the guava, savour different spices in their aromatic state, cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, vanilla, black pepper, and others. You get to see rare plants used for preparing cosmetics such as henna, lipstick tree, perfume tree etc. You will also visit the ruins of the Kidichi Persian baths en-route.

Jozani Forest:
This wetland forest is the only one remaining intact on the island. Only 45 minutes from the city center, it is home to the surviving members of the Red Colobus monkeys (procolubus kirkii), a very rare species that is only found in Zanzibar. The forest is a delight, with a swamp in the middle, and a small stream flowing into the ocean. There is a mangrove forest, where small colonies of cute primates host visitors to a live show. The park is best visited before 10 AM or after 4 PM.

Prison Island:
Also known as Changuu Island, this islet is a 20-minute motorboat ride west of Zanzibar. The narrow island is 8 miles long and a half mile wide. Slave owners formerly used it for detention of disobedient slaves. It was then bought by General Matthews who constructed a jail on the island, hence the name Prison Island, but the prison was never put into use. It still stands derelict. Off this Island, you can swim, snorkel, and see giant turtles. We can arrange lunch on the island.

Dolphin Trip:
The bus leaves town at 8:30 AM for a one hour drive to Kizimkazi Dimbani Southwest of the island. Then you take a motorboat to the dolphin conservations area, where you can swim close to the dolphins. Life jackets and snorkeling gear is included. At mid day, you go to a sea-side sand bank where a seafood BBQ is served under a temporary shelter. After lunch, you can continue snorkeling in the coral reefs, or try line fishing. You depart Kizimkazi in the late afternoon and arrive back at your hotel by 6:30 PM.
